The applicable requirements depend on the location, type of work, and hazards involved. Washington’s rules include the Unified Safety Standards for Fall Protection in chapters 296-880 WAC. Oregon OSHA has requirements for both general industry and construction activities. Product specifications alone do not establish compliance; the installed configuration and work practices must also meet the applicable requirements.
Yes. Delta Prevention’s non-penetrating guardrails use counterweighted bases rather than anchors through the roof membrane. Roof covering and slope should still be reviewed before installation. A non-penetrating design does not automatically guarantee that every roof manufacturer’s warranty conditions are satisfied.
Both systems are OSHA-compliant and similarly priced. VSS Compact is designed for situations where available rooftop space is restricted, such as between equipment and a parapet. VSS Classic provides a different support configuration suited to linear roof-edge protection, ladder exit or when the rail must be positioned as close as possible to the roof edge. The VSS Classic is the only one that can be installed at an angle, to lower the visual impact. We design the best configuration based on your roof layout, clearances, and required protection area.
Workers may not need personal fall protection for a hazard that is adequately controlled by a compliant guardrail system. However, additional protection may still be required for ladder climbing, work outside the guarded area, installation activities, or other exposed locations. The complete work task must be evaluated, not just the presence of guardrails.
Not in every situation. A warning line identifies a boundary but does not physically stop a person from falling. Its permitted use depends on the work to be performed, roof conditions, distance from the edge, and applicable regulations. It should not be treated as a substitute for guardrails wherever physical edge protection is needed.
Unlike individual fall protection system, non-penetrating guardrail does not need to be certified yearly. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and maintenance instructions and the applicable workplace safety requirements. Usually, a visual inspection is recommended to ensure the guardrail is maintained in its original condition. Rooftop walking-working surfaces must also be inspected and maintained in a safe condition; damaged equipment or changes to the roof should prompt a review before continuing use.
Start with your project location and a description of the areas you want to protect. Existing roof photographs, drawings, approximate dimensions, and information about roof access are helpful. DACO can discuss the additional information needed to evaluate product options.
