OVERHEAD CRANES: TOP SAFETY TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND

POSTED IN: Cranes 04/05/2021

Also known as a bridge crane, an overhead crane is used for lifting extremely heavy loads. It can move heavy loads forwards, backward, and sideways. It has two runways that are parallel to each other and a bridge that connects the two runways. The bridge is moveable and it carries either a fixed or movable hoist, that can travel on the overhead runway structure.

MAINTAIN THE HOIST

Since the heaviest loads are lifted by overhead cranes, keeping the crew safe during operation and use is of the highest importance. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides regulations regarding cranes, 1910.179 – Overhead and gantry cranes. Beyond these measures, take care of your crew and your business with these top safety tips.

It’s important to maintain a certain level of care for the hoists in overhead cranes and regular maintenance checks are a must. Get a certified crane inspector to conduct scheduled maintenance checks, identifying any areas of concern that could cause an accident before one happens.

Take care to not overload the hoist with too much weight by checking each and every load and adhering to the maximum weight capacity. This will help extend the longevity of your overhead cranes and their hoists.

CHECK FOR OBSTRUCTIONS WHEN USING OVERHEAD CRANES

It’s critically important to make sure all areas of the overhead crane’s zone are clear of obstructions. Since you are dealing with extremely large and heavy loads, obstructions can cause major accidents. For maximum safety, the crane needs to easily lift the load well above any obstructions and make sure to clear out anything that may cling to it, which happens easily.

SECURE ALL ATTACHMENTS

Overhead cranes have a number of attachments that must be properly secured to lift and transfer extremely large, heavy loads and objects. When extremely heavy loads fall to the ground due to insecure attachments, such as its slings, serious accidents can happen and put the crew and the property in danger.

All attachments need to fit properly, and the crew members should check hook latches before operating the crane and transferring the load.

DRIVE CAREFULLY

Overhead crane drivers must operate the equipment carefully and responsibly, knowing that slight jerking or movements could cause the load to slip and fall and put the team members in danger. The driver must remain in control and focused throughout the process, and regular training and safety seminars are a must.

CREW MEMBERS SHOULD STAY AWARE

Since overhead cranes carry large loads, all crew members should stay aware of the dangers associated with moving heavy loads, and they should remain alert throughout any operation of the overhead cranes. It is a great idea to implement safety signs, such as informing employees of hoist operation when near the hoist, and employees should be trained on proper safety procedures regarding these cranes.
