UNITIZING YOUR LOADS FOR SHIPMENT: INVESTIGATING RELIABLE METHODS

POSTED IN: Packaging Equipment & Supplies 05/04/2020

Your warehouse is a busy place. Unitizing your loads can calm the chaos, increase production, and even encourage better safety practices. Packaging, arranging, and transporting materials and products needs to be done strategically and with organization. Load unitization can help with all these things, and also create better utilization of space.

When dealing with materials such as wood, bagged goods, and packaged products, stability is critical. Effective unitization eradicates handling issues and keeps your merchandise safe, sturdy, and transportable. Let’s look at the different methods of unitizing your loads.

FOUR PRIMARY WAYS OF LOAD UNITIZATION

Depending on your industry and the products you are handling, you’ll have to decide as to which load unitization method works best for you. The following four methods make unitizing your loads for shipment much easier and safe.

Shrink Wrapping – This is probably the least expensive and easiest method of packaging your merchandise. When a stretchable plastic film is wrapped around products and exposed to heat, the material shrinks and contours to the package, and it’s excellent for case good shipments.

Stretch Wrapping – As you may have already heard, stretch wrapping is the most popular method of unitizing your loads for shipping. Numerous industries use stretch wrapping for securing pallets as it keeps the products to be shipped very carefully knitted. Stretch wrap can be applied manually or by pallet wrapper machines.

Strapping – This method of unitizing your loads is done by banding products and packages with polyethylene, plastic, or metal. If your industry distributes high density and bulk commodities such as lumber and metals, you may want to consider this method of unitization. Strapping can be performed by hand or machine.

Angle, Corner Boards, and Edge Protectors – Palletized loads, cases, and other boxed goods can become more unitized by placing angle, corner, and edge protectors on packages. These protective barriers provide an extra layer of security, strength, and stability to your merchandise by absorbing impact during loading and unloading.

MAXIMIZING PRODUCT PROTECTION THROUGH EFFECTIVELY UNITIZING YOUR LOADS

You, undoubtedly, invest a lot of time, effort, and money into your inventory. Between paying employees and production costs, most business owners cannot afford to take a hit on their bottom line at replacing damaged goods. It’s best to unitize your loads right from the start so that you can decrease accidental damage and theft.

Choosing one of the four methods of load unitization (or a combination of some or all) will help you accomplish your safe shipping goals.
